Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    ssl and costs

been working on a fairly inexpensive or free SSL solution for a website/app for a while now.
finally came up with Rapid SSL. https://www.rapidssl.com and got 3 year for 39.00 and they installed it for 30.00 more which save me a lot of time, I usually mess it up.
there is also some information on the site about different levels of SSL including EVSSL which gets the Green lock. I did not need that though.
It is worth a visit to the site just to learn about ssl, if not very well versed on it like me.

Several people in our skype group are now using this.

    Re: ssl and costs

SSLs.com has certificates as low as $4.99/year. And if you are hosting on AWS, Amazon will give you certificates for free.

With HTTPS becoming required for more and more functionality as each browser update comes out, the prices for certificates should no longer be a barrier to using HTTPS and HSTS exclusively on all sites.

I am using Let's Encrypt . You get SSL (free) using server script automatically max period is 90 days, then cronjob and new 90 days certificate. This all works without problems but is for Linux. But there is also this project for Let't Encrypt for windows but I have not tested it.

If you are using classic Alpha server then Abyss X2 server is good choice for reverse proxy. You install SSL to Abyss . Abyss can handle dual hosts(http + https) and Abyss X2 also SNI (use multiple SSL certificates in Abyss with one IP address ). Abyss works also with Alpha v11.

I disagree. cost does matter with over 30 of my own websites/webapps running and maintaining 60+ others.
Even at 30.00 per year, it starts to add up. So I look for price along with ease and quality.

Someday in the future, ssl will be close to free or free. May be a year or more though
I just looked at aws and compared to one my small apps, 296.00 per month? does not seem right. and that is on Linux. Yes, they can afford to supply a free ssl certificate.

I supply hosting to a number of clients, many of which have been on yahoo, aws, godaddy and others so mostly know what the real charges and bills come to.
I have one that is on my 300.00 per year plan that thinks it is cheap. He left another that was almost that per month.

In one of my apps I am using Hetzner Web hosting Level 1 Linux (no MySQL but SQLite yes). Price is about 1,8 dollars per month and free Symantec Basic SSL Certificate included.
Works well and performance is great.

              Re: ssl and costs

Just ordered and installed an ssl from slss.com last night - went very smooth. This was not for my alpha application but another somewhat static site I own that is pretty much a static site hosted by Godaddy with a Cpanel deluxe hosting account. I currently pay way more for a ssl from godaddy at $69/ 2 yr - ssl was about 15 dollars for a 3 yr so that is extremely affordable. Since this is an established site that ranks very well with Google, I setup a 301 redirect with a htaccess change.

Overall I give ssl.com a A+ and wanted to thank Alpha (Lenny) for making the post!!! I appreciate it - everything went very smooth.

                Re: ssl and costs

I needed ssl for a password app and site., so is critical.
I use paypal for payments , so they handle that part. It I added something like "stripe" as a gateway, ssl would have to be there as well.
I supply ssl for some of my clients for a fee as part of their hosting plans and if I had enough needing it, I could get some real deals on ssl.

                  Re: ssl and costs

HTTPS is for far more than submitting payment information, for a wide variety of reasons. As you browse around the web, keep an eye on your browser's address bar and you will find that more and more sites use HTTPS exclusively, including alphasoftware.com.

This video explains many of the reasons very well, and debunks common myths that often prevent web site owners/administrators from implementing HTTPS. It is a bit long, but well worth the investment in time so I recommend not skipping ahead through it.

                      Re: ssl and costs

Well, Google is pushing everyone that way even offering better rankings (all things being equal) to the https website. There is considerable evidence that this is true in the SEO world of war. If you have an existing site, I would recommend a 301 redirect so as not to lose your rankings with the website being considered a "new" website when changing from http to https
I personally saw 5 of my URLs jump to a first-page listing on the same search making no other change than to implement SSL so there must be something to it as I doubt THAT was a coincidence.

For all the technical reasons out there I can say that I believe that all businesses that are trying to EARN trust with new customers, that green SECURE site in the address bar make people feel like they are at a "real" business. I know when I see a website with that I give it a bit more credence over one that doesn't.

I think there USED TO be two level purpose of SSL certificate. One was to secure data and other to make customer belive they act with right company. But not anymore. Majority are moving to domain level cerificates because we all know that green does not infact mean anything. As a customer you anyway have to know the right hostname to be sure.

                          Charles,
                          similar google results here
the green(EV SSL) just means the site ownership was verified, but that really means nothing. That verified owner could be in jail, terrorist or..
My ssl installed covers all needed and since I use Joomla for front end, it also has a switch to use the ssl sitewide so logins, and password entries and lookups are covered as well as purchases. also, there is another domain name for the site and it is also covered.
For SEO, having a page or group on Facebook is also a plus. Must be same name as you use for the site. My Passwords is the website name and FB is also MY Passwords for the page.
                          Called tying it all together.

I'm going to respectfully disagree because WE might know a thing or two about a thing or two but the solid fact remains that the general public eats it up like fast food to a homeless person - it's ON.
Going one step more I think the green means SOMETHING - when it comes to a local business, I think it means a lot! On the other hand should I add an ssl to www.adultsheepfinder.us? Personally, I don't think it will make a difference, lol and yes I do own that - it's a parody site I thought would be a hoot to do.
Now, on the other hand - www.parkerwildlifecontrol.com which is my personal business (besides NWCOPRO software) benefits greatly from an SSL as a local business. My point was only to say that the SSL was cheap and easy to obtain, and at the same time positively influenced the rankings of my business.
                            ~Cheers
