Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can't start email from button on form

    Desktop application.

    I need to open the default email client from a button on a form. Using either action scripting of xbasic I get the attached error.

    However, if the email address I want to use is in a memo field, then I can click the address and it is populated into a new email message using the default email client - exactly what I want. image attached.

    What needs to be on the button?

    Bill.

    t = table.current()
    email_client_external(t.email)

    also does not work
    t = table.current()
    email_client_external("[email protected]")

        email_client_external("[email protected]") does not work for me in the interactive window of v11 or v12 - IF OUTLOOK IS ALREADY OPEN. If I close Outlook then email_client_external("[email protected]") does work from the interactive window and displays a new Outlook email!

        Did you try this with Outlook already open?

        Bill.

          Looks like the Outlook window is opened as a dialog. If you send that email, then you can open another email....

              Not sure what you mean by 'send that email'. The Outlook window has no pending email to send. It just sits open and checks for new POP email every so often. From the Outlook window I can click it's button to start a new email, but in this case I want to click the Alpha button to start a new email.

              What makes me know this is possible is that, on the Alpha form, clicking an email address embedded in a memo field (address displays as a hot link) does correctly open a new Outlook email message, even when Outlook is open. I just don't have a way to see the code Alpha is executing in that case.

                1. Outlook open.

                2. Alpha code to send email executes and an Outlook email window is opened.

                3. Complete that email and then Alpha can open another Outlook email window. But not before the the previous instance is sent or closed without sending.

                Also, I would use a fieldname other than email. ie t.email should be t.primary_email or something like that.

                Long lost memory of using 'email' as a fieldname being a problem is returning....

                  Al,

                  Well, I got around to setting up another machine to test this on - which I should have done in the beginning. It does work correctly on a Win 10 machine with Office 2010, but not on the Win 8 development machine. So now it is down to figuring out the configuration differences that cause the problem. Thanks for testing.

                  Bill.

                    So do you have a boat? Cuz you certainly have an anchor for it.

                    If you can't upgrade to Win 10, then tie a rope around the Win 8 machine and go fishing...
