Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Desktop deployment

    Hi there,

I am still using A5 V11 for the desktop and deploy using the unlimited runtime I purchased.

Is there a way to do this in latest AA development offerings? i.e. If I subscribed to the new software, would I still be able to buy an unlimited desktop deployment license and take advantage of the browser components, etc.

    Thanks

    Re: Desktop deployment

    I believe you can.
You need to talk to AS Sales.
I was close to purchasing a V12 DT with unlimited RT.
The Web side is only on a local machine though, as far as I could make out.
Cost is reasonable, but the only benefit I could see was the JSON stuff a bit better than V11.
I stuck with V11 DT only, and went a different path with Web stuff.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.

      Re: Desktop deployment

Don't know about the latest subscription setup but I purchased V12 a few years ago during the "charter/legacy member" upgrade push that had a perpetual license. Unlimited runtime was included. As Ted mentioned the json functions are immensely more helpful in V12, especially with desktop web components, and you can build phone gap apps for mobile.

          Thanks Jon.
So is AA V12 the latest version?

I see on google that they are talking about V4.

          Is that an alternative product?

I already have a very old V12 Alpha Dev product, but never used it and decided not to continue subscribing.

It is not clear what the product offerings are and whether you can buy older versions.

            Re: Desktop deployment

They renamed V12 to AA. my version of v12 is 3.5. I have no reason to go to AA V4. Pricing is a definite factor for me. They also bloated the package immensely with JS stuff.
I have Unlimited runtime that matches that and the build numbers.
I think V11 had an installer built in that disappeared with V12/AA. I never used it, but already had astrum installer(free) that was a bit ahead. I also use other tools in the install and running of AA apps.
There is all kind of threads in the forum on installers and deployment methods and some good solid tricks. Look below.

                  Re: Desktop deployment

There are few intersting concepts in version 12 desktop. Node and Chrome control. Both has been in Alpha few years. Chrome control works in Xdialog so you can build for example resposive Boostrap Xdialogs. This is nice feature if you think RDP and mobile. Few months ago Alpha integrated the new latest version of Chrome Control to developer.

And with Node you can do anything. Xbasic can call Node functions. However current Alpha Node helper functions are build for web and to get them work you have to for example save files to web root also in Desktop side... But these two features alone bring Alpha Desktop to whole new level compared to version 11.

                    Re: Desktop deployment

We've been with Alpha since around 1993. We upgraded to v12 back in 2015(?) . We have 4 developer's licenses and the unlimited runtime. We've deployed the runtime to about 240 desktops. I'm not sure what the pricing scheme is now, but unlimited runtime is a godsend for the money spent.

                      Re: Desktop deployment

In web side 240 deployed application * server lisence = lot of money .

This is the reason that Alphas last major desktop update is from year 2012. Who wins?

                        Ken,

For our purposes, the desktop is exactly what we need. It works as we want and our pricing is fixed. I win!

MS is pushing hard UWP applications as only platform in Windows. Soon they take first steps with S Mode. Meanwhile I am also in winning team with Alpha. I have returned mostly with Alpha to desktop but the truth is that problems are maybe not anymore fixed by Alpha team in Desktop side.

                            Re: Desktop deployment

I believe alpha has settled on AA instead of V12, so it is AA v4.5 as latest alpha for exe. I have AA V4.2 running for runtime and dev now. has all kids of node and js stuff. I don't use that on desktop for now. KISS seems best. Less to break is better. I have one real simple spp has over 1500 deployments so far packaged with astrum installer. I have 2 others that are similar and one highly complex but basic app using runtime and shadowed with over 400 installs and up to 40 users on it at any time.
Right now working on a SS application with shadowed for 20 users that will get distributed in a partnership deal.
