    Default PDF viewer problems

We are experiencing strange behaviour of a form that has a PDF viewer supercontrol. The problem only occurs when running under Win 10 and occurs with both Pro and home versions. Basically what happens is that instead of displaying the PDF the computer puts up the sort of message that you get when downloading a file from the Internet. If you click on the PDF is then displayed in the default PDF application not in the supercontrol. What is odd is that only happens on some machines yet they appear to be configured exactly as ones that fail in terms of permissions and security etc.
    Anybody else seen this ?

    Hi Bob:

I don't use the SuperControl so I can't help you with that. If you think about a different approach, here's a different one to consider. It's a modeless xdialog using the Adobe Reader ActiveX which is installed along with the reader, so it's available anywhere the reader is, in all versions after V8, I think.I did the first version of this before the SuperControls were available.

I have a client who wants to save all the transaction reports to PDF, so I did this one with a hard coded path to a "reports" folder in the application folder. It's a little rough around the edges, but functional. If you needed to, you could add a get file box to retrieve a pdf from any location. There are also lots of Adobe viewer options you can turn on, most of which are remmed out in this one.

    Bob,

You might check to see if the Windows file associations (PDF) are the same across all workstations.

You might check to see if 3rd party PDF viewer software installations are the same across all workstations.

It's possible you might see a pattern that's present on the machines that "work correctly" with Alpha and those that don't.

    Good luck.

Windows 10 has its own PDF viewer installed, you might have to change that too.

The PDF viewer super. Control relies on the browser to display the PDF using it's PDF plugin..
If there is no plugin installed in IE you get the file dowload you are seeing.
In adobe acrobate try using the fix installation option.
Other PDF viewers may install thier own viewer plugins into. IE which may or may not work.

Thank you all for your assistance.
    The steps that worked were

    1) Ensure MS edge is set as default browser

    2) Install latest release of Adobe Acrobat DC ensuring the plug ins are installed

    3) Set Adobe as default PDF viewer

    Finian,

The Pdfviewer works well with Adobe DC. I have the Adobe Pro V9 and am wondering how to work with Adobe v9 is the default setting instead of Adobe Dc?

    John:

I didn't do anything to make it work with DC. Frankly I was kind of surprised that it did work with the latest version. When I did the coding originally, I was looking for it to work on version 8 or later, so I would expect it to work with version 9.

If it isn't working with V9, check the sub-function "CheckAdobe" which attempts to do a version check. Ir relies on some registry calls that could be giving bad results.
