Well Alpha got hacked a few years ago and alerted everyone who might be affected, and my bank called me to ask if I "really wanted those performance car part from Detroit." I hadn't ordered any so the transaction was stopped.
Alpha had alerted everyone who had purchased using credit cards on line and are now secure I believe.
Facebook, Yahoo and a couple of mobile phone companies got hacked but they tried to keep it secret.
Not sure what the answer is other than making sure you recognise the senders address. I have to get this tightened up on my system and have spam and phishing filters set up as well as a learning process which will catch rogue email and quarantine it. The auto learning process takes time.

Google was the subject of a huge phishing attack on Wednesday, and Selwyn was one of up to 1 million Google users affected: https://threatpost.com/1-million-gma...attack/125436/

Google acted quickly and cleaned things up rather quickly. We were aware of the compromise within minutes of it happening and revoked all malicious access in under 10 minutes. However it was a very fast moving worm, so many faked emails were still sent out.
