Our New Buyer's Guide will help you select the right technology to help you build better mobile apps.

If you’re looking to build better mobile apps more easily, it’s a good idea to turn to the pros. We’ve rounded up key advice to help you build better apps quickly and cost effectively.

A recent blog by Erin Dale in SearchMobileComputing, titled “Mobile application development process comes with hurdles," cites recent advice from speakers and attendees at the Boston Red Hat Summit 2017. One telling piece of advices comes from Steve O'Keefe, product line director at Red Hat, who said, "App development is being driven by mobile; modern application development is mobile." He continued, "There is no way you can be doing modern app development without considering the screen real estate for smartphones and tablets.” He also said that all applications being currently written “means agile apps that translate seamlessly from desktops to smartphones and tablets."

Here at Alpha Software, we're taking it a step farther than RedHat. We're watching trends carefully and it's clear that tablet sales have peaked.  Recent data in Business Insider made this abundantly clear. The device of choice has become the phone and every employee has one.  To speed business and satisfy employees, customers and partners, enterprises must not develop only for the tablet, but must have business apps that work flawlessly on smartphones. Our groundbreaking work on mobile optimized forms is helping our customers respond to current trends while preparing their apps for the future.

Focusing on the ROI of Mobile Apps

Chad Holmes, senior mobile solutions architect at Red Hat, had a lot to say about how to measure the ROI of enterprise mobility. He noted that it can be tough for companies to gather all the costs related to mobile app development, but that despite that, it was something that needed to be done. And he added that things get easier once you finally bite the bullet and start gathering financial facts, and your accuracy in pinpointing them gets more accurate over time.

As for the most important benefits that go into calculating mobile ROI, he says they’re improved productivity and a faster time to market. And he says that he’s found that enterprises would do well to launch five or six business apps that would truly help its workforce, instead of focusing all efforts on a single killer app. Big killer apps, he says, often are too expensive to build in-house, and rarely pay off.

Joe Stanganelli, enterprise technology consultant, attorney and writer, had a relatively simple piece of advice to build better mobile apps: Push out app updates quickly, and adopt a continuous delivery model.

We have some more advice to add:

    • Make sure to consider a low-code. rapid mobile app development (RMAD) platform for building your mobile apps. That way, you’ll be able to easily design for multiple form factors and quickly iterate your apps. At the same time, you'll be able to leverage a wide range of developers and line of business users to build mobile apps -- saving time and cost - to significantly improve ROI. We outline the top technology criteria to evaluate in our Buyer's Guide to Selecting a Rapid App Development Platform.
    • When thinking about onboarding, training, updating and scaling for a new mobile app dev platform, think outside the box. Often vendors claim that you can become proficient on their platform quickly, but buyer beware. In speaking with real platform customers, we discovered that some of these bullish claims turn out to be 6- or 12-month onboarding programs. If you need rapid development and same year ROI, this could really hurt your plans. Don’t simply settle for traditional training and professional service offerings. Work with a vendor with creative, flexible offerings that get users proficient quickly, at a very cost-effective price. We outline some of the newer industry offerings to be aware of in our new RMAD Buyer's Guide for enabling your organization to build better mobile apps.
