We are at the beginning of the most significant shift in computing that any of us have experienced, triggered by the advent of mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. According to a report released last week, "Small businesses get a competitive lift from their employees’ use of mobile devices and that employees mostly deliver it by bringing their own smartphones and tablets to their jobs."
Trends such as bring-your-own-device (BYOD) and custom mobile applications are fundamentally transforming the small business landscape, with 75% of mobile users agreeing that mobile device usage is critical to their job and 36% of IT managers saying that some employees have replaced their work computer (either laptop or desktop) with a smartphone or tablet.
This computing shift and these rapidly expanding trends are creating significant new business development opportunities for Alpha Five developers!
Small business owners are realizing the benefits of deploying mobile technology in their workforce, but management issues remain. In a recent summary of the report, eWeek quoted CDW's VP of Small Business Jill Billhorn as saying, "CDW’s report says that small business users consider productivity and business apps on mobile devices to be game changers that make them more efficient and competitive. They want still more apps to help them manage unique aspects of their businesses, and the prospect is for dramatic growth in tablet use. That expanding demand, though, also means growing need for solutions to manage and secure mobile devices, as only a fifth of small business IT managers say their company has deployed or even plans to deploy such a solution."
