Why IT project failure is largely a thing of the past with Alpha Five Version 11

IT project failure continues to plague companies. Why is this not a problem with Alpha Five version 11 projects?

Over the years, one of the most serious issues that IT has had to deal with is the dreaded and all too common ‘failed IT project’ – which is painful and even potentially catastrophic for two reasons:

  • The waste in terms of money and  time
  • The lost opportunitycost associated with not finishing a project that, at one point was deemed important to the organization's success
In this new Mobile Era, when developers' need to create applications that not only run on tablets and smartphones but on desktop PCs and laptops as well, this problem is even more pronounced. Why? Because the complexity of building business applications has increased significantly because of the need to run them on and have them adapt in an intuitive and uncompromised way to a wide array of smart computing]devices. These applications are extremely important to organizations as they strive to increase their efficiency and effectiveness and remain competitive. For example, an insurance company needs a customer facing app that enables people to manage their interactions and conduct their transactions with the insurance company 24×7; and, this app has to be accessible on both desktop browsers and mobile devices.

Here are some sobering statistics published in CIO magazine by the Standish Group, a leading consultancy that studies project success rates in IT:

“Specifically, 32 percent of IT projects were considered successful, having been completed on time, on budget and with the required features and functions. Nearly one-in-four (24 percent) IT projects were considered failures, having been cancelled before they were completed, or having been delivered but never used. The rest (44 percent) were considered challenged: They were finished late, over budget, or with fewer than the required features and functions.”

Why is this relevant to the Alpha Blog?

Firstly, solving this very problem is why Alpha Five was created!

Secondly, it’s why Alpha Five version 11 is such an important development platform. The success rate of Alpha Five version 11 projects is extremely high because developers who have become proficient with Alpha Five  are dramatically more productive than developers using other available programming options.] The result? Alpha Five v11 developers get the job done, faster, more efficiently, and at a dramatically lower cost than others do.

Last summer we surveyed developers using Alpha Five version11 and 96.5% indicated that they would definitely recommend Alpha Five to their peers. Developers are enthusiastic about  Alpha Five version11 because it gives them a very real competitive advantage. It allows them to create their applications on time and within budget; and, it helps them achieve both their business goals and their users goals.

The chart at the beginning of this blog post  indicates how Alpha Five version 11 developers rate our software in terms of productivity compared with other web development options such as PHP, Visual Studio.Net, Ruby and Java.

So why are satisfaction levels so high with Alpha Five version 11 and why are Alpha Five version 11 developers  getting their projects built on time and within budget?

This is a question we get asked all the time and it boils down to what can be called the “Alpha Way” of developing data driven business applications.

It is relatively easy to build an application development tool that requires coding/programming using a low level language. The key benefit is that developers can tackle virtually any problem with this approach. The drawback of this approach is of course the vast amount of time taken to program. And unless the developer is a hard core programmer, they simply cannot use the tool successfully.

At the other end of the spectrum, it is also relatively easy to build an application development tool that offers the developer menus from which to build their application. This sounds like an attractive idea because it speeds up application development and empowers a wider array of developers to build applications this way. Unfortunately this approach has serious limitations because invariably the developer runs into project requirements that require custom coding and this renders this “high level” approach ineffective.

The “Alpha Way” - Productivity with no compromise of power. At the other end of the spectrum, it is relatively easy to build an application development tool that offers the developer menus from which to build their application. This sounds like an attractive idea because it speeds up application development and empowers a broader class of developers to build applications. Unfortunately this approach has not proven to be very successful over the years because invariably the developer runs into something that requires custom coding and this renders this “cuddly” approach ineffective.

The “Alpha Way” -  Productivity without compromise

At Alpha Software, we have studied this dilemma very carefully over many years and, as a result, we have created the “Alpha Way:” an effective and proven approach to developing innovative and robust business applications in the fastest, most efficient and cost-effective way possible.

The Alpha Way offers the productivity and empowerment of the menu approach (we call this ‘declarative’ programming,) along with the power and flexibility offered by the ability to code if and when its required.  In essence, when a developer builds an application with Alpha Five version 11, they start off using our components (which we call builders)[. These components or builders offer an amazingly rich array of properties that enable the developer to specify the behavior of the application they want to build in a very precise and detailed way without having to code. However, if coding is needed or desired, then Alpha Five [v]11 offers a [robust] client[-]side and server event model that can be used to call code and web services and hook into API’s so that the developer can achieve all of the application objectives.

The net effect of this approach - The Alpha Way - is that the vast majority of the application is built with the components or builders available in Alpha Five version 11, and this yields massive productivity gains. At the same time, the developer can include as much custom code as the application requirements demand, which, in turn, ensures complete control and flexibility.

As a result,  Alpha Five version11 developers are able to ensure that their application development projects end up being categorized as  IT success stories.
