Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

New user - Right justify or 0 pad field?

I've just started using Alpha 5 after a very long relationship with Clipper. The application I'm working on has a customercode field (6 characters) which I need to store in the customer table either left padded with 0's or right justified. Could someone provide a simple way to do this using Field Rules for the table? If it can't be done that way, is an xBasic script attached to the CanEditField Field event of the customercode field the only way to go, and if so, could someone please point me to a sample to get me started?

    Thanks in advance.

The canwrite field event would be the one.
Do a search on "canwrite" in the Xbasic Reference chm. A good explanation of the field rule event and the variable a_field_value.

How do you generate the customer code? Do you want an autoincrement?

The user enters the code. I don't use an autoincrement field.

Then John is right - CanWrite event...

          something like:

          a_field_value = padl(a_field_value,6,"0")

Hope I didn't screw up the formatting...

            John,

Thanks for your help. As you suggested, the Xbasic Reference had enough for me to work with and I now successfully left pad my customer code with 0's. I had to use the .PDF version as I couldn't find a .CHM. If I wasn't using the new Adobe Reader 6.0, I would have gone crazy.

            Thanks again.

                  Michael,

Just curious. What made you jump ship from Clipper to A5?

                    John,

Clipper is a wonderfully powerful language with TONS of add-on functionality, but it's strictly DOS-based. It even works fine in a DOS or Command prompt under Windows (not so great networked under Windows 2000), however I need to move to a strictly Windows environment. I've fooled around with Visual FoxPro and Access, so I have a feel for Windows programming. I've looked at Xbase++ (Clipper on steriods for Windows), but from a support viewpoint I didn't feel comfortable that they were based in Europe. After evaluating Alpha 5, I liked its power and apparent ease-of-use and felt Xbase was easy enough to pick up. Alpha 5 has some strong back-end similarities to some other application development environments I've used in the past, specifically something called Formula IV (written by the inventor of pcANYWHERE) and UltiMADE which was a DOS Clipper-based RAD tool.

                    I hope this helps.

                    Regards,
                    Michael

Would you please provide the URL for the .CHM file?
