Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Xbasic Lookup and Set Variable

Hi, how do I lookup a value in an access database table field and set a variable to that value? Seems simple but for the life of me I can't work out how Alpha wants me to do it.

The variable then needs to be available via js to use in a grid calculated field.

    Thanks, Richard.

Can you explain the timing of how/when you need this value? Are you clicking a button to get it, or should it be available with initialisation, etc. ?
    Screenshots are always helpful...

      See: http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...-opening-files
I'm pretty sure that's what he wants.

Ok, then I would recommend setting up a repository table to simplify the coding.

        See videos M21 & M22

Also, see video M58 about state vars and passing between serverside and clientside.

Re: Xbasic Lookup and Set Variable

Thanks Andy, my db has a "parameters" table which stores values that I need to reference. For example I'm trying to get a value called ReportPath then use that in every row of my grid. I'm using it to concatenate the ReportPath with ReportName so I'll end up with a calc field that looks like "\\MyServerName\MyReportsFolder\MyReportName1.pdf". The next row would be "\\MyServerName\MyReportsFolder\MyReportName2.pdf" and so on.

So the variable needs to be available when the grid loads as it is used in the calc field. I've tried setting a Session var in the page that the grid is on but it goes missing if I logout of the app and back in... need to refresh the page to get it back for some reason. So I thought about setting the session var in xbasic code - looking up the ReportPath value in my Parameters table then setting the Session var as I don't want to hard code it because the ReportPath value could change from time to time which would mean recoding and republshing to the customer.

In Access for example I would do a simple DLookup to set a variable value and I was hoping I could do similar in xbasic.

I looked at the vids but can't see how they would suit this scenario.

          Regards, Richard.

Sounds like you should change to a 'view' query and include the reportpath as a field.

Re: Xbasic Lookup and Set Variable

Yep I know what you are saying but the parameters table is static table with no relationship to other tables. It's used to store parameters that are used throughout the app and there is only one entry for each parameter eg

              ReportPath \\MyServer\MyReportPath
              CompanyName SomeCompany
              CompanyAddress SomeAddress

Surely Alpha has a way of looking up a value then making it available to use in a component?

Re: Xbasic Lookup and Set Variable

Why not just use Andy's suggestion. It doesn't matter that it has no relationship to whatever other table you are using for your grid. Just join or union it in. Make it so every row has all the data in your parameters table available to it or just the data needed for that grid.

Yes, there's a way to look up a value but it's way more work than the above. If you can use your query, do it.

Try including the param table in your query....

                  Code:
                  SELECT params.MyParam, othertable.ID, othertable.ProjectName
                  FROM params, othertable
                  WHERE params.MyKey='mykeyval' AND othertable.ID>25
It would not be efficient to query for a simlple parameter via acallback, and then to query for the grid. This would be silly, wouldn't you agree?

Either query at the login stage and save this info in a global javascript object or session variable (for future use), or include it in the query as suggested.

Thanks all, I went down the path of adding the param table to my query and found A5's SQL Query Builder even has a check box to add a table with no relationships. Then, still in the SQL Query Builder, I created an Expression to concatenate the fields to create my full path.

Then it was a simple case of referencing the expression field in my grid to open the pdf report. No variables or client JS needed, fantastic!

Appreciate all of your assistance and perseverance steering me in the right direction. A5 surprises me again :)

                    Regards, Richard.
