Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Running Alpha 5 on PDAs?

Has anyone had any experience, at all with, running Alpha 5 on any kind of PDA?

If so, what kind (operating system), etc?

    Thanks,
    Ray

If you were going to run A5 on a PDA, it'd pretty much have to be a (pretty beefy) PocketPC on Windows.

It might be possible to use the web-application server to serve to PDA, though I didn't have much luck there, though it's more a factor of the PDA in question. (Like the Sony PSP browses regular web-pages very well, but a lot of PDAs only support HTML 3.2 or less.)

    Good luck.

      Hi Ray,
I have a customer who is interested in this very thing. I am trying to also make it work. If you get it done, please let me know.

        Hi Kevin,

We've decided to abandon the idea of using PDAs. We'll be using Laptops.

        Best,
        Ray

          Hi Ray,
I can see why. I deal with the trucking industry and some of my customers were looking for a way to use my app in a pda for when they are away from their truck, but it just looks too difficult, so I am also.
          Thanks.

Check out OQO.com, they have a PDA sized full blown computer. Could be the best of both worlds

              Hi Chaps,
              Check out this site: http://www.handtops.com/
One model is the Flybook is a small laptop/tablet - could undertake some fantastic Alpha Applications on that!

                  Web App + Blackberry

Perhaps do this as a Web app.

Has anyone ever tried to load a simple A5W page to see if it will work?

Or for that matter, does anyone have a Blackberry with Web access who might want to give it a try.

I could build the page - as I'm curious to see if it would work.

Hmm. I have a host, and can host it if you want to test it. It may work. I am not sure how to make a web form, something I am working on at

                      Hi Dave,
The Web Application will work - you just need to be mindful on how you design the GUI interface. Microsoft's PC Pocket Software allows you to re-size your web page to either fit screen or not. So if you have a large GUI interface using a non fit setting your going to be spending a lot of time scrolling horizontal & vertical to access your data fields in the application. The other method is to design the GUI interface to fit the screen pixel size. The Flybook Laptop in my previous email has a screen approximately half the size of an A4 sheet! Also the laptop has a Mobile GSM SIM card facility, so it can behave like a normal /phone/PDA with the spin touch sensitive screen.
May help with the type of GUI interface design?
                      Regards
                      Andy

I just test an app we are building for the web with v7. It appears the login page works fine and once we login we have a mouse over menu component that doesn't appear to work on the blackberry.

When I get a few minutes, I'll build a different menu component and test and let you know.
