25 years later, we remember those we lost.
Personally, each September 11th I prefer to focus on the brave first responders and everyday people who saved lives that tragic day. From rescue workers neighbors who reached out to help, the outpouring of care and fellowship was unprecedented.
Some heros who helped on 9/11 had 4 paws.
One inspiring heroine is Roselle, a seeing eye dog bred and trained by the organization Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael, California.
Blind since birth, Michael Hingson relied entirely on Roselle. He was working on the 78th floor of the North Tower when the first hijacked plane hit.
Roselle immediately went to work for over an hour, working through corridors, crowded stairwells, and debris.
She carefully guided Michael and his colleague down 1,486 stairs amid intense smoke and noise. On the journey, the two gave hope to hundreds of others who saw them calmly making their way through the chaos.
Amazingly, despite her bravery and focus amid the overwhelming noise that day, Roselle had always been terrified of thunder.
This inspired the title of Michael's Bestselling memoir, "Thunder Dog The True Story of a Blind Man, His Guide Dog and the Triumph of Trust." The story details the incredible bond of trust and communication built between Hingson and Roselle that helped them survive the day.
