When you think of farming, you may imagine scenes of idyllic work, but the truth is far different than that. The United States Department of Agriculture warns, “Agriculture, which has high rates of fatalities and serious injuries, ranks among the most dangerous professions in the United States.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) adds, “Agriculture ranks among the most hazardous industries. Farmers are at very high risk for fatal and nonfatal injuries.” It spells out the details:
- In 2017, 416 farmers and farm workers died from a work-related injury, resulting in a fatality rate of 20.4 deaths per 100,000 workers.
- Every day, about 100 agricultural workers suffer a lost-work-time injury.
- In 2014, an estimated 12,000 youth were injured on farms; 4,000 of these injuries were due to farm work.
A variety of local, state and federal requirements cover ways to make farming safer. And farmers themselves know how important safety is on the job. To keep everyone safe, they do training, create security checklists, make sure they’re up to date on equipment maintenance and much more. Many farmers are finding that mobile technology is the best way to do that and more to make sure their farms are safe places to work.
One great example of such a system is Safe Ag Systems, an SaaS app made possible by Alpha Anywhere. It helps agricultural businesses stay on top of compliance requirements and encourage a safety culture in the workplace. The system helps organizations meet legal obligations related to safety, and tracks worker and contractor records. The system offers a unique set of agribusiness-specific work health and safety related policies which are readily available for edit and use on farms.
All workers’ key contact information, health records and health action plans are immediately accessible in case of an emergency. This ensures workers and managers can know what to do if a worker has a medical episode. In addition, it lets you create safety checklists, including the ability to manage your Safe Work Procedures by attaching them to the relevant machine, tool or structure. Workers can then use a QR code to access them. Workers can make a comment, create a follow-up task and accept your Safe Work Procedures, ensuring that agribusinesses keep the required safety records.
There’s much more as well, including a comprehensive Risk Register for tracking and documenting all aspects of a farm’s agricultural safety plans and records.
