SMBs Are Flocking to Low-Code/No-Code Platforms

small business smbTL;DR: SMBs are finally adopting low-code and no-code software because it's become a competitive necessity, developers are hard to source, and large enterprise app development solutions don't meet small business needs.

The report says there are multiple reasons why SMBs are adopting low-code and no-code software. First is that digital maturity has become a competitive necessity, and LCNC helps SMBs get there. Second is that “SMBs struggle to attract digitally fluent staff, let alone developers as this talent is easily snapped up by large enterprises.” LCNC solves the problem because it lets non-developers build powerful applications. Finally, the report says, “Enterprise IT solutions don’t meet SMB needs.”

I’ve written before that no-code/low-code platforms are being used not just by small companies, but by large enterprises and professional developers as well.

Low-code/no-code (LCNC) has been expanding even beyond that and is gaining a substantial amount of traction among medium-sized businesses. So concludes the Accenture report, “Technology democratization for smaller companies.”

The report calls the platforms “an accelerating tech wave.” It says, “We have already seen tech waves accelerate SMB business growth…We believe LCNC [low-code/no-code] will have an equal, if not larger, impact on SMBs. Today, there is a growing set of SMBs employing LCNC to deliver value to every facet of the business by enabling and simplifying everything from customer acquisition to back-end processes. This comes at a key moment when SMBs are looking for ways to compete and differentiate against larger companies and other SMBs.”

Low Code- software and SMBsThe report says there are multiple reasons why SMBs are adopting low-code and no-code software.

The report notes that many software makers “aren’t designing solutions with SMBs in mind. Typically, they develop an enterprise or consumer product that they tweak for the SMB market vs. catering to SMBs’ business needs for IT agility, speed to market, and cost-consciousness. LCNC changed that dynamic with the potential to empower limited technology experience business users to develop enterprise-class solutions that truly meet their business needs.”

All this will accelerate the use of the platforms by SMBs, the report concludes. It says, “Nearly half of the SMBs we surveyed stated that their business uses LCNC. We expect this trend to accelerate, as 56% of these SMBs plan to increase their weekly usage of LCNC platforms relative to other enterprise software. What’s more, 58% of the SMBs that use LCNC today expect their investment in the platform to increase. It is currently estimated that 65% of all app development will be LCNC by 2024.”

It concludes that LCNC will eventually become a game-changer for SMBs: “It’s clear that there’s already a lot of energy around the LCNC movement. The buzz is set to grow further. To put it into context, we expect LCNC to be as big for SMBs as cloud has been for large enterprises.”
