2022 Predictions: What To Expect In App Development Trends

2022 predictions

What will happen to app development in 2022? Are there big new trends on the horizon, or will the year simply be more of what happened in 2021?

2021 saw many trends, in particular, the rise of citizen developers as tomorrow's app builders.  Looking ahead, a new TechTarget article predicts: 5 app development trends to watch in 2022 and we've added some of our own.

Technology Trends: App Development Predictions for 2022

Trend #1: Low-Code/No-Code Development Software

2022 prediction 1 no code software

Let’s start with the most important trend of all, one that dwarfs all others, according to the article: Low-code/no-code development tools. The article sums up its importance succinctly: “Low-code and no-code application development models are not only making inroads, but they are also reshaping the field of app development altogether.”

The article quotes Holger Mueller, an analyst at Constellation Research, with this insight about what will accelerate low-code/no-code this year: "There are not enough [data] scientists in the world; there are not enough developers in the world, not enough no-code/low-code." So this year, he says, artificial intelligence will be used to make it even easier to write code.

Chris Condo at Forrester Research said this about products that use AI to write code: “In the past, these products would simply help you write cleaner code, but they are now writing complete code for you."

Trend #2: Agile and Reliable Development Practices

The next trend: Agile and reliable development practices. This means writing code more quickly and reliably and being able to adjust when circumstances require it.

Companies will demand apps faster than ever and will be less patient about bugs or issues. Developers will need to raise the bar on development speed and app dependability.

2022 app development prediction the great resignationTrend #3: The Great Resignation

Trend number three, according to the article, “The great resignation.” This trend is intimately related to the low-code/no-code movement. The article says: “The software development industry has not been immune to America's massive employability problem. The knock-on effect for developers is that they can name their price, even though being short-handed can be a real pain for their employers. The Great Resignation is one of the accelerants of low-code/no-code tools, as others in the food chain are being trained to code; ditto automatic coding, which does not require a person to write code.”

2022 app development prediction the pandemic continuesTrend #4: The Pandemic Continues

Number four on the list are a variety of other pandemic-related dev trends, all related to working from home and remote work. Gartner analyst Arun Chandrasekaran says this will change what is expected from developers. "I think we've clearly seen demand for more of what we call the hybrid workplace; [then the question becomes] how do you enable a distributed enterprise with a hybrid workforce in the remote [workplace]?" he asks.

2022 app development prediction sustainabilityTrend #5: Sustainability

The final trend: Sustainability. The article concludes: “Finally, climate change is no longer just the fodder of environmentalists. It has become a business opportunity, as seen in the rise of investment and product development around environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria.”

Chandrasekaran says, "It's one of the top three priorities, I would argue, for a board of directors."
