According to Gartner, Low-code development tools will see tremendous growth in 2021, thanks to a surge in remote development, and the push for digital business acceleration.
Gartner research indicates that the worldwide market for low-code development technologies will grow to $18.3 billion this year. This represents an increase of 22.6% from 2020.
Fabrizio Biscotti, research vice president at Gartner, explained the reason for the explosive growth. “While low-code application development is not new, a confluence of digital disruptions, hyperautomation and the rise of composable business has led to an influx of tools and rising demand.” The report adds that, “Low-code as a general social and technological movement is expected to continue growing significantly.”
A wide variety of low-code technologies will become increasingly popular. These will rage from low-code application platforms (LCAP) to intelligent business process management suites, multiexperience development platforms, and others.
LCAP will continue to be the largest part of the low-code market, according to the report. In addition, this segment will grow faster than the low-code market overall. Gartner says LCAP will grow from nearly $4.45 billion in 2020 to more than $5.75 billion in 2021. This is a high-growth market at 30%.
Digital business acceleration is a big market driver. Gartner reports, “Digital business acceleration is putting pressure on IT leaders to dramatically increase application delivery speed and Time to Value. The increased demand for custom software solutions in support of digital transformation has sparked the emergence of citizen developers outside of IT." He explains that this has influenced the tremendous growth in low code.
Gartner adds, "on average, 41% of employees outside of IT – or business technologists – customize or build data or technology solutions". Gartner predicts that 50% of new low-code customers will live in business units outside the IT organization by the end of 2025.
Gartner’s Biscotti explains, “The economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have validated the low-code value proposition. Low-code capabilities that support remote work function." He explains that these include digital forms and workflow automation. These solutions "will be offered with more elastic pricing since they will be required to keep the lights running.”
Also driving the rush towards low-code, Gartner says, is "hyperautomation.” Hyperautomation, in Gartner’s words,“ is a disciplined approach that organizations use to rapidly identify, vet and automate as many approved business and IT processes as possible. This phenomena has been trending at an unrelenting pace for the past few years. Now, the pandemic has heightened demand with the sudden requirement for everything to be “digital first.”
Biscotti concludes, “Globally, most large organizations will have adopted multiple low-code tools in some form by year-end 2021." He explains, "as companies embrace the tenets of a composable enterprise, they will turn to low-code technologies that support application innovation and integration.”
