How has COVID-19 dramatically changed companies digital transformation plans?
By the beginning of 2020, the experts had weighed in with their predictions about the big trends in digital transformation this year. But then COVID-19 came along, upending virtually all digital transformation strategies and digital technologies.
So how have experts changed their predictions about the year’s digital transformation initiatives?
At Forbes, Daniel Newman has looked at his original predictions and then changed them due to COVID 19. His blog post, “The Top 10 Digital Transformation Trends Of 2020: A Post Covid-19 Assessment,” is must reading for anyone who’s thinking about digital transformation.
First, he says, COVID-19 has accelerated the push towards 5G and the new WiFi 6 standard. That’s because “Workers left their offices in well-connected areas for at-home offices in the sprawling suburbs and beyond.” They need high-speed connections for their mobile devices and desktop PCs.
Artificial Intelligence and machine learning have been boosted by the pandemic as well, he says. There are multiple reasons for that. But a key one, he believes, is that “As we try to make sense of more data to keep people, schools and workplaces safe, AI and ML will continue to be a shining star.”
Conversational AI will become vital for customer service, he believes. He puts it this way, “Conversational AI will continue to see increased development as companies realize they simply don’t have the human bandwidth to keep their customers informed and satisfied during a global emergency.”
Big data and cloud computing are both required for artificial intelligence and machine learning, so those technologies have become even more important than in the pre-COVID world, he believes.
Blockchain has become more important as well, he says. That was made clear when the Department of Homeland Security said blockchain was essential for fighting COVID-19 and repairing the destruction to the economy.
Blockchain can be used to do that in multiple ways.
Newman writes, “Blockchain, if deployed correctly, has the potential to fix damaged supply chains by processing and verifying transactions quickly.” For details, see the article by the World Economic Forum, “This Is How Blockchain Can Be Used In Supply Chains To Shape A Post-COVID-19 Economic Recovery.”
Business processes have been affected by COVID as well, because of the need for personal distancing and remote work. So Newman says robot process automation (RPA) and Intelligent Process Automation (IPA) have become important for effective digital transformations.
He says, “Even as coronavirus passes, we’ll see more and more companies looking to offload as many tasks as they can to ensure that business runs smoothly once the next global disruption occurs.”
